This has been a crazy year. We all know that by now. One of the biggest changes that came to New Japan Pro Wrestling this year was the handling of the G1 Climax. Their biggest annual tournament was to be pushed from the Summer to the Autumn due to the 2020 Olympics taking place in Japan, but now amidst the pandemic, the tournament is set to begin.
Coming up this Wednesday, New Japan will be announcing the participants in this year’s tournament. In recent years, there have been 20 participants in the tournament. However, the pandemic may affect that. Many of the promotion’s foreign stars have been unable to return to Japan, meaning they may not be able to participate.
This means the likes of Jay White, Will Ospreay, and Jon Moxley may not return to the tournament. There are options for the company to find a solution here. A number of people could make their tournament debuts, and others like Yuji Nagata could return. They could also reduce the field of participants.
The 2020 G1 Climax is set to kick off on September 19 in Osaka.
Last year’s tournament was won by Kota Ibushi, who went on to lose to Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 14.
