Will Ospreay On Being ‘Shoehorned’ Into Current NJPW Role NJPW

With NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 on the horizon, Will Ospreay has opened up about his position in NJPW and his growth as a wrestler.

Speaking to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, Ospreay discussed his growth as a wrestler, saying:

“I think the one thing the one thing about me now is that I’ve finally matured.

It’s taken like ten years.”

“I’ve become my own man now.

“I’m a frontrunner in the United Empire.”

He would also address Kenny Omega’s accusation that he was ‘shoehorned’ into the New Japan spotlight, stating:

“There’s something that Kenny said in a New Japan interview that I was ‘shoehorned’ into a position after (Omega), the Bucks and Cody left to form AEW.

“To an extent, he is right.

“I was happy being a Junior Heavyweight.

“I was super happy just doing that and during my Junior Heavyweight run finally realizing I could put on some size and my training differentiated.

“It was only after he left and after we had that chat in the Tokyo Dome that my mind did start changing and I realised the power and ability that I do hold.

“If I trained right, I could be considered one of the best in the world.”

Ospreay would also reflect where he sees himself and how long he believes he can continue to be at the top of his game, saying:

“It just speaks volumes that, from 2018, if you look at the list of the matches I’ve had, it’s just a constant maturity from me.

“And now, I’m… I wouldn’t say I’m at my peak but I’m approaching it.

“I’m one year away from turning thirty, I’ve still got plenty of gas left in the tank.

“I’ve got like ten years still being at the best of my abilities.”

Looking towards his January 4 match against Omega for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship, Ospreay declared:

“Well, Kenny’s had all the best matches, but I can’t tell you any good ones he’s had in 2022.”

“This is now or never for Kenny.”

“This is time to bring back Cleaner, the Best Bout Machine.

“That guy we want to see in that golden age, but he’s against me now.”

“I’ve been the guy flying the flag, I’ve been the guy on the front line for New Japan.”
