New Japan Pro Wrestling have announced that the biggest show of their calendar – Wrestle Kingdom 17 – is to be held in honour of founder Antonio Inoki.
The announcement was confirmed through the NJPW Twitter account with “more details to follow.”
Antonio Inoki passed away at the age of 79 on October 1st.
He founded NJPW in 1972 and held multiple wrestling championships around the world in his storied career.
He would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010.
Outside of wrestling, Inoki was a politician, sitting on the House of Councillors, and fought Muhammad Ali in the War of the Worlds fight in 1976.
Wrestle Kingdom 17 will take place on January 4 2023 at the iconic Tokyo Dome and is currently scheduled to feature Jay White defending his IWGP World Heavyweight Title against Kazuchika Okada as the main event match.
