This year’s Wrestling Dontaku events are set up to be incredibly memorable. When the worst looking card is the night devoted to the Bullet Club Civil War, you know you’re getting your booking right.
Night One
Night one, which will take place on April 29, will be headlined by four matches pitting Los Ingobernables De Japon versus Suzuki Gun.
The first two matches will be minor singles matches with BUSHI going up against the ever-underrated El Desperado, and they’ll be followed by Hiromu Takahashi vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru. These two matches serve as a sort of closing to the feud between the two teams, and they’ll also be a bit of a preview for the Best of the Super Jrs. which starts on May 18.
Our next match will be a rematch from Wrestle Kingdom 12 with Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr. and Lance Archer) challenging for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships against the current incumbents EVIL and SANADA. This match was amazing the first time, and while I don’t expect them to recapture the magic from their first match, I do expect an excellent outing between the two teams.
Our main event of night one will see the current IWGP Intercontinental Champion Minoru Suzuki vs. the leader of LIJ, Tetsuya Naito. This is a match that could, on paper, be a gem, right up there with AJ Styles and Suzuki’s match from the G1 a few years ago. This will be about Naito’s ability to create space and then his ability to avoid getting caught in Suzuki’s devastating knee bar.
