NJPW/WWE
An update has emerged on an international star potential signing with WWE after they parted ways with New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
It was recently reported that EVIL was “strongly rumored” to be joining WWE after his recent Wrestle Kingdom match saw the star lose the NEVER Openweight Championship to the debuting Aaron Wolf.
An update has now emerged on the status of EVIL within WWE, thanks to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
In the current issue, Dave Meltzer states:
Nothing has been announced but EVIL is not listed for any upcoming shows. He was on the 1/20 show at Korakuen Hall in an eight-man teaming with Ren Narita & Yujiro Takahashi & Dick Togo to lose to Aaron Wolf & Toru Yano & Yoh & Master Wato ending with Wolf using an armbar on Takahashi.
There was no big scene or anything. After the show they announced all the cards through 2/11 and he’s on none of them. The belief is that he’s headed to WWE.
EVIL and Io Shirai were a couple in Japan, but I’m not certain if they are still a couple, as it would have had to have been years of a long distance relationship.
But Super J Cast and the Wrestling Observer website have reported him going to WWE. There had been talk of that for weeks, but at press time, nobody from WWE has confirmed that.
He’s a solid worker when he needs to be, but I’m not sure what would make him stand out on the WWE main roster, where most are solid workers. It really hurts the House of Torture group because Sanada left as well. Ren Narita would have to be the leader if that’s the case.
As noted in the earlier report, EVIL hasn’t featured in any NJPW crossovers with AEW, with the belief that Tony Khan isn’t a fan of the star.
