The first major match for NXT Takeover: Phoenix was announced after last night’s NXT with former champion, Aleister Black invoking his rematch clause against Tommaso Ciampa. Black lost the title back in July after Johnny Gargano’s interference inadvertently led to Ciampa’s crowning moment.
A triple threat between the three men was scheduled for NXT: Takeover Brooklyn IV, only for an attack later to be revealed to be by Gargano put Aleister out of action for three months.
With a win over Gargano at WarGames positioning the Dutch superstar as the top contender for the gold, it makes sense that a Ciampa vs Black rematch is the next step.
However, this wasn’t the only big rematch booked involving Black last night as it was confirmed that he would be facing Gargano yet again, this time in a steel cage match on December 19.
Given Gargano’s prominence in this story, don’t be surprised if we do get to see that long-awaited triple threat in Phoenix.
