NXT Review – July 18 2018: “It doesn’t matter who wins this match…!”

It’s NXT time again! And after a week’s absence I’m looking forward to once again bringing you all the fun from Full Sail as Candice LeRae, Kairi Sane and Nikki Cross compete in a triple threat to decide who will challenge Shayna Baszler at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.

We start with Dakota Kai coming out to some plinky-plonk music. She’s trying to make it two consecutive wins on NXT TV but Lacey Evans is looking to rebound from her loss to Candice LeRae last time out. “GIVE HER THE WOMAN’S RIGHT” says a sign in the crowd. That move is getting over, even though we’ve only seen it a couple of times. The Kiwi starts quickly with a drop kick and gains a series of near falls. Nigel McGuinness explains Kai and Evans have been bickering on social media and Mauro Ranallo calls them “Twitter troglodytes”, of all things. Then Percy Watson speaks. As usual, he adds nothing of value. Why won’t they let Percy be his outrageous self from the original NXT Season 2? He was much more entertaining back then. Oh yeah!

Anyhow, The Lady turns things around and dominates Kai with a surfboard and slingshot elbow drop. Back comes the Captain of a Team That Doesn’t Exist with a flurry of kicks and vicious Face Washes. Out of nowhere Lacey hits the Woman’s Right and knocks Kai sparko for the three. This match was a tad long, for me, although Kai displayed a welcome intensity that’s been missing from most of her TV bouts.

Cathy Kelly is backstage with Ricochet. He calls Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong ‘Undisputed Morons’ and says Adam Cole has hardly defended his North American Title. Ric vows to win it off him. Adam Cole vs Ricochet one-on-one? Yes please.
