A WWE NXT star and current champion has revealed what left his parents “shocked” about the early stages of his run with the company.
Many were surprised when El Hijo del Fantasma took off his mask and became Santos Escobar. Speaking on WWE’s The Bump, Escobar spoke about his parents’ reaction to him unmasking. His dad was of course also a pro-wrestler in Mexico, where mask-wearing is tradition.
Escobar said:
“It shocked my dad and my mom. But it’s true, the mask is one of the most important aspects of Lucha Libre culture and tradition. To be fair, I had already lost my mask in Mexico, and once you lose your mask, you’re not supposed to re-mask again.
“But what I wanted to do was be El Hijo del Fantasma – this big feature at the Cruiserweight Tournament. It gave me a way to reintroduce Lucha Libre to the WWE Universe because I think they’ve been misled by masked men jumping all over the place; Lucha Libre is not like that. Putting the mask on again, I managed to capture the attention of the WWE Universe.”
Escobar is the leader of the Legado del Fantasma group in which he is joined by Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde.
He has reigned as the NXT Cruiserweight Champion for 119 days and counting, most recently retaining over Isaiah Scott this past Sunday at TakeOver 31.
