NXT TV to go two hours, TakeOver events to be extended?

There’s not much that wrestling fans agree on. Who’s the best wrestler in the world? What is Viktor of the Ascension’s greatest moment? Which is worse – Raw or Total Divas? They’re all questions that divide opinion. There is one thing that all graps followers can agree on though – NXT is dead good.

And, it seems WWE has realized that too. As per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, plans have been discussed internally to expand the weekly NXT TV show to go longer than one hour.

There are reportedly three scenarios being discussed. The plan is for NXT to run EITHER:

  • 90 minutes
  • Two hours
  • Two separate shows of one hour each

Dave Meltzer stated in the Observer:

There are those in the company pushing for the idea of the NXT TV show going two hours because they have so much talent, and to also increase the time of their TakeOver shows.

The potential change is heavily influenced by the sheer depth of talent on the NXT brand. Fantastic wrestlers such as Fabian Aichner and Raul Mendoza have found it hard to break through, but if there’s an extra hour tagged onto the show, slotting them in somewhere becomes a hell of a lot easier.

This could all be dependent on how the new TV deal with FOX plays out, and if it is as lucrative as hoped. The idea also seems to be tied in to NXT‘s plan of “global localization,” particularly to make room for as many new signees as possible.

NXT‘s TakeOver specials – you know, the ones that outshine WWE pay-per-views every time they take place – are also in line to receive an increased time allocation, with the reported plan being to extend them to three hours, as opposed to the usual two/two-and-a-half.

This could be influenced by recent proposed changes to the structure of the WWE Network, with the system set to implement a tiered pricing structure rather than a flat $9.99 per month for all subscribers.Fans are often a bit touchy with regards to the idea of any change to NXT. The mentality of said fans is that NXT has been so consistently good for so long, would changing it ruin it completely? Well, it looks like we could find out sooner or later.

It is important to remember though that these are only discussions rather than a definitive plan, but time will tell whether WWE follows through with the idea.
