The original plan and reason for the ‘Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ tonight at WWE Backlash between Randy Orton and Edge has reportedly been revealed.
According to Sportskeeda, the match was initially not meant to take place tonight but instead at SummerSlam, but WWE brought it forward due to the lack of star power available for tonight’s show.
Big names listed as being unavailable were Becky Lynch (pregnant), Bray Wyatt (with newborn), Brock Lesnar (limited schedule) and Roman Reigns (isolating).
There are, however, a whole host of big names who have been in action lately that just didn’t make the card, such as AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, King Corbin and others.
Edge and Orton agreed to move the match forward to Backlash, after which point Vince McMahon decided to add the ‘Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ tagline to further boost the star power.
Another note was that Vince McMahon is focused on using “big stars right now” as opposed to the Paul Heyman philosophy of building up new stars like Angel Garza, Apollo Crews, Ricochet, Aleister Black and others.
