Report: Matt Riddle Was Originally Slated To Win 2022 Royal Rumble

The original plan for the winner of the men’s Royal Rumble match has reportedly been revealed.

In the main event of Saturday’s show, Brock Lesnar won the men’s Rumble, a surprise entrant in the match after losing his WWE Championship earlier in the night. Plans for the match had reportedly been changed a number of times in the day before the event.

PWInsider now reports that Raw star Riddle was originally set to win the men’s Royal Rumble match. There was reportedly a pitch for his tag team partner, Randy Orton, to win the bout in his hometown, but Riddle was the frontrunner up until Lesnar was chosen.

WrestleVotes has since reported that WWE originally had plans for Riddle vs Randy Orton for the WWE Title, tweeting:

“WWE had plans since the pairing began last spring for Riddle vs Randy Orton @ SummerSlam, which didn’t happen. Plan was to hold off til Mania. I’m told now only a handful of creative members want to spilt them, w/ the idea that if the match happens, it should be for the WWE title”

Backstage morale following the show was reportedly low due to the number of changes made to both Rumbles. Reports have also claimed that Shane McMahon has significant backstage heat for booking the match around himself.

Brock Lesnar is set to choose his WrestleMania opponent on tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw. Women’s Royal Rumble winner Ronda Rousey is also set to appear on the show.
