The original plans for the International Championship following Rey Fenix’ title win have been revealed, following Orange Cassidy regaining the title.

With Fenix winning the gold from Jon Moxley on the September 20 edition of Dynamite Grand Slam, the duo were initially set for a rematch on this Tuesday’s (October 10) show.

This bout ultimately didn’t happen. With Moxley not cleared to compete, it was announced that Orange Cassidy would instead challenge for Fenix’ title at the beginning of Tuesday’s episode.

Cassidy was ultimately victorious, winning back the title he dropped to Moxley in early-September at All Out.

Per Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW was hopeful that Moxley would be able to compete on Tuesday’s show to win back the International Championship.

Noting that Fenix had also been working through injuries, Meltzer wrote:

Orange Cassidy beat Rey Fenix to win the International title. Fenix had been working with a bad back, or hip, or both.

The hope was to have Jon Moxley win the title from Fenix and defend against Cassidy, likely on the PPV.

Unless plans change, that match would still happen but with Cassidy as champion.

With Cassidy now once again holding the gold, a title rematch against Jon Moxley is still possible.

The duo notably fought in the main event of the All Out pay-per-view, with Moxley’s title win ending Cassidy’s 326 stint with the gold.
