Original Plans For WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Revealed

It was reported on Wrestling Observer Live that WWE had some different plans for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship that debuted on this week’s show, and actually wanting to introduce the title a few weeks back.

The belief is that WWE originally wanted to make the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic for the titles, but opted to rush the tournament and have the winners earn a shot at the maIn WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.

At this time, it’s unclear why WWE made the decision to rush the women’s Dusty Rhodes cup and have it take place at the same time as the men’s. For more on that, stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com.

The report notes that the titles were not ready for NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day last month, so WWE had Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez challenge for the women’s tag titles instead.

There is no word on why Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez’s reign with the titles lasted less than a day, but some have speculated it’s because NXT is preparing to have Gonzalez beat Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship next month.
