Original Plans For Women’s Title Matches At WrestleMania 39

Original Plans For Women’s Title Matches At WrestleMania 39 WWE

The original plans for matches for the Raw and SmackDown women’s titles at WrestleMania 39 have now been revealed.

At the April 1-2 event, Charlotte Flair will defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Royal Rumble winner Rhea Ripley.

The Raw Women’s Championship will also be on the line at the event, with Belair set to face off against Asuka, who won an Elimination Chamber bout to earn a shot at the EST’s title.

Per Fightful Select (subscription required), WWE at one point had different plans for both title matches at the Show of Shows.

The report indicated that Rhea Ripley was initially slated to face Ronda Rousey, who was originally set to enter WrestleMania season with the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

Rousey ultimately dropped the title to Flair on the December 30 edition of SmackDown.

The report also noted that instead of defending the SmackDown Women’s Title at WrestleMania, the original plan was for a returning Charlotte Flair to challenge for Bianca Belair’s Raw Women’s Championship.

These were reportedly the planned matches in late November, early December. Fightful stated that by this point, plans for the rumored Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey match at WrestleMania had been scrapped.

Ronda Rousey reportedly pushed for her current tag-team run with Shayna Baszler, which you can read more about right here.
