Pat McAfee Match Announced For WWE Backlash 2025

A match for WWE Raw announced Pat McAfee has been announced for the upcoming Backlash pay-per-view on May 10.

Last week on Raw, GUNTHER took out his frustration after losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso at WrestleMania.

The targets of GUNTHER’s frustration were announcers Michael Cole and Pat McAfee, with the Austrian attempting to choke out Cole until McAfee made the save, which then led to McAfee being choked out instead.

The incident led to a storyline suspension and fine for GUNTHER.

On tonight’s WWE Raw a week after the attack, McAfee addressed GUNTHER and challenged the former World Heavyweight Champion to a match.

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis – filling in for Raw GM Adam Pearce tonight – came out and said that GUNTHER’s suspension will be lifted in time for Backlash so that GUNTHER and McAfee can have a sanctioned match at the PLE in St Louis, which McAfee agreed to.

McAfee has already had several matches in WWE, with the last real one coming against Baron Corbin at SummerSlam 2022.

His in-ring debut came against Adam Cole at NXT TakeOver 30 in 2020, followed a few months later by his involvement in a WarGames match as McAfee, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch faced the Undisputed ERA.

McAfee also had a match against Austin Theory against WrestleMania 38 in April 2022, which was immediately followed by an alleged “match” between McAfee and Vince McMahon, which McMahon won.

McAfee also technically beat The Miz at WrestleMania 39 in 2023 which wasn’t really a full match, and was in the 2024 Royal Rumble but didn’t get physical and eliminated himself after a matter of seconds.
