Plans for WWE cruiserweight tag titles scrapped

Earlier this year, it was rumored that WWE was going to introduce tag team titles into its cruiserweight division on 205 Live. However, even after designs for the belts had been commissioned, the idea seems to have been scrapped, as rumored by Cageside Seats.

WWE has never implemented tag team titles within its cruiserweight ranks since the division’s inception in 2001. WCW did have Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships, which were extremely short-lived and only endured two reigns before being deactivated in 2001. The champs were Kid Romeo & Elix Skipper and Billy Kidman & Rey Mysterio Jr.

WWE‘s cruiserweight division isn’t necessarily void of potential tag champions, with the Lucha House Party, Brian Kendrick & Jack Gallagher and Tony Nese & Buddy Murphy all competing as teams on the show recently.

The issue could lie with the lineage and history of Cruiserweight tag belts in wrestling, such as the aforementioned disappointing WCW run. It could also simply be a case of the 205 Live roster not being large enough and the show not being long enough to fit them in.

Either which way, it seems Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships are something we won’t see introduced in WWE any time in the foreseeable future.
