Possible Reason For WWE Payback A Week After SummerSlam Revealed

WWE officially announced its Payback pay-per-view for August 30 on Friday, just one week after SummerSlam, and here’s a possible reason why.

Many people are questioning this scheduling decision, but Dave Meltzer on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio might have provided the answer.

Meltzer suggested an angle with one of the two top title matches at SummerSlam, either the WWE Championship or Universal Championship, will lead to needing an immediate rematch. He said:

“The key will be an angle at SummerSlam’s gonna lead to needing an immediate rematch. So it’ll be whatever that angle is, whether it’s Drew and Randy Orton… it’s gonna be one of the two major championship matches is gonna have to have an angle to build for an immediate return.”

The WWE Title match will see Drew McIntyre defend against Randy Orton, who has written the likes of Edge, Christian, Big Show and Ric Flair off TV lately. Shawn Michaels will be appearing on Raw tomorrow to address that match.

SmackDown’s Universal Champion Braun Strowman will defend against “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, and after a double turn on Friday Strowman heads into that one as the heel and Wyatt as the babyface.
