Tampa Bay officials met last week to discuss the state of several big events, including WrestleMania 36. However, the authority did not make a decision on whether or not the big pay-per-view will take place. A decision is expected to be made this week.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller has said that if WWE doesn’t cancel the show by next week, Tampa Bay officials will likely tell the company that the show cannot go ahead as originally planned.
Based on the latest CDC recommendation on Coronavirus, it is highly unlikely that WWE can put on WrestleMania in April. But could they are already aware of this and simply delaying cancelling the event for financial reasons?
Bryan Alvarez claims that he has been told WWE is waiting for the decision to be taken out of their hands so they can claim their insurance policy. Should WWE cancel the event off their own backs, they won’t be entitled to any money:
“I have heard from more and more people very close to WWE who are telling me the reason this thing has not been cancelled or postponed is an insurance reason. The city needs to cancel, they need to prevent WrestleMania from happening for WWE to collect on an insurance policy. That is the information that I have been given from several people. Now, I don’t know if this is true or not but these people are close to WWE and that’s what they’re saying.”
This certainly makes sense. An event like WrestleMania will cost an awful lot of money to put on, so WWE are probably not too keen on losing out on all that money due to Coronavirus.
For whenever the show does go ahead (like June/July), it has been reported that WWE may be considering holding a postponed WrestleMania 36 in a significantly smaller venue.
