Real MJF AEW Tension Update, SummerSlam Main Event Spoiler, Kenny Omega Return Date – News Bulletin – July 22, 2022 AEW

An update on the real tension between MJF and AEW, a spoiler may have emerged for the SummerSlam main event, news on Kenny Omega’s return date, and more.

It’s Friday, which thankfully means it’s almost the weekend, but before we get there, let’s get caught up on all the latest wrestling news – I’m Liam Winnard for WrestleTalk.com, and this is our news bulletin for July 22, 2022.

Unfortunately I still can’t make it through reading one of these without having a coughing fit, so no audio version again today.

MJF/AEW Situation Update

Some very interesting comments have been made regarding the MJF/AEW situation by someone quite close to MJF – Alexander Hammerstone.

Hammerstone is the current MLW World Heavyweight Champion, and during MJF’s time with MLW before he joined AEW, Hammerstone, MJF and Richard Holliday made up a faction together called the Dynasty.

In an appearance on former WWE star Rene Dupree’s podcast, Hammerstone spoke about what he knows regarding the MJF situation.

MJF’s last match came at Double Or Nothing on May 30 where he was destroyed by Wardlow

Hammerstone confirmed that if the situation is currently a work, it didn’t start out that way as there were very real frustrations on MJF’s side of things.

He pointed out that at some point, MJF did sign a contract he thought was agreeable and took a gamble in that sense, but then added: “MJF’s case is a little bit different because he was like, ‘Here’s the measurements, here’s the ratings, here’s this, here’s that, here’s the sales, here’s the segment views’, and it wasn’t a difference of a couple dollars. It’s like, ‘Why are these people getting paid five/ten times more than me, just because of where they came from? What are they doing here?’.”

MJF’s current situation with AEW remains unclear after he was removed from the roster page and hasn’t been seen since his incredible promo on the Dynamite after Double Or Nothing in early June.

SummerSlam Main Event Spoiler?

It appears a spoiler may have emerged for the SummerSlam main event between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

A new Ringside Collectibles figure has been released, specifically a figure of Brock Lesnar with a couple of interesting accessories – the Universal Championship belt and the WWE Championship belt, the two belts that make up the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Brock Lesnar will challenge Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, filling in for the injured Randy Orton, who was Reigns’ original opponent

Now obviously, this is just a toy and there’s every chance it doesn’t mean anything, but you can see why some people would think it’s weird to market that particular figure with those particular accessories if Lesnar wasn’t actually going to win both belts.

WWE has been heavily teasing that no matter who wins out of Lesnar and Reigns in their last man standing match, Theory will be there to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract so he can be the one who leaves SummerSlam with both belts instead of either of the other two.

Kenny Omega Return Date

It was recently reported that word’s been going around that Kenny Omega could be nearing a return, and there were even some potential plans discussed involving him and the Young Bucks.

We now have more of an idea as to exactly what Omega is targeting as a return date.

Kenny Omega hasn’t competed since losing the AEW World Championship to Adam Page

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said that Omega is hoping to be able to work the All Out pay-per-view on September 4. He hasn’t wrestled since Full Gear on November 13, 2021.

Meltzer did reiterate that it isn’t a sure thing, it’s just what Omega is hoping for right now.

He also said the hope is that CM Punk will be back for All Out too, as well as probably Bryan Danielson.

Other Stuff

In other little bits of news…

Meltzer reported that Damon Kemp, real name Bobby Steveson and brother of Gable Steveson, is another name on WWE’s list of potential future stars in NXT.

Speaking of Gable Steveson, former WWE star Mr Kennedy said he’s been training Steveson while he’s still waiting to properly debut in WWE.

Veer Mahaan confirmed in an interview with the Daily Star that his bizarre segment on Raw this past Monday was the start of WWE trying to portray him as something more than just a generic angry monster.

On the Jimmy Kimmel show, The Rock said his daughter’s NXT name Ava Raine is “cool”, and – “I always like to say that Ava Raine could mean a lot of things, but in my mind, it means she’s going to lay the smackdown on candy asses”.

Many fans originally thought the recent mysterious vignettes on WWE TV were for a Bray Wyatt return, but that was soon debunked

Bray Wyatt updated his Twitter bio to a quote that says “Begin again kid, it’s what you do”, and he labelled that quote as being from “VKM”, which are of course the initials of Vince McMahon, so that caused a bit of a stir.

Dave Meltzer revealed that AEW held talks with Mauro Ranallo at one point, but nothing ever came of it.

Cole Karter, the former Troy ‘Two Dimes’ Donovan in NXT, is now signed to an AEW contract according to Fightful Select‘s sources. It’s believed to be a tiered deal so he isn’t signed full-time or anything like that. Karter had a match with Ricky Starks on this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, his second ever Dynamite match after a very short one with Anthony Ogogo in April 2021.

Tony Khan confirmed that Colt Cabana will be involved with ROH, including Death Before Dishonor this Saturday. Khan declined to comment on the relationship between Cabana and Punk.

Khan also confirmed that the Briscoes are signed to contracts with ROH.

Road Dogg called out AEW over the barbed wire everywhere match, saying, “So they paid attention to that detail (the barbed wire around Justin Roberts’ microphone) but then forgot to have the girl rehearse opening the cage”.

Chris Jericho Painmaker covered in blood on AEW Dynamite

Chris Jericho managed to beat Eddie Kingston thanks to help from the Jericho Appreciation Society

Chris Jericho revealed he suffered a broken nose during said barbed wire deathmatch.

After Dax Harwood’s amazing promo on Dynamite this week, FTR have released “fight like an 8 year old girl” t-shirts with 100% of royalties being donated to the American Heart Association.

And the NWA pulled Nick Aldis from his upcoming World Championship match against champion Trevor Murdoch at NWA 74 and replaced him with Tyrus. PWInsider reported there are legitimate issues between Aldis and NWA President Billy Corgan over the creative direction of the company.
