The real reason AAA star El Hijo Del Vikingo turned heel soon after the WWE acquisition of AAA has been revealed.
When WWE made the announcement of the AAA acquisition, Vikingo was quickly spotlighted as the Mexican promotion’s top star.
He quickly won the AAA Mega Championship from Alberto Del Rio, who has yet to appear on a WWE affiliated show, before more recently losing the title to Dominik Mysterio.
After winning the title from Del Rio, fans in Mexico began to boo Vikingo, with some comparing it to when WWE fans were booing Roman Reigns years ago when the company was essentially trying to force fans to accept him as the next top babyface.
Speaking on the latest episode of his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Konnan, who has long been heavily involved backstage in AAA creative, and has been on the English language commentary team since the WWE acquisition alongside Corey Graves and JBL, has now commented on the response to Vikingo and the decision to turn him heel because of it.
He explained:
“In Mexico he just gets booed because people are pissed that they took the title off of ADR (Alberto Del Rio) to put it on Vikingo, and so it is kind of the Roman Reigns thing. ‘Oh, this is who you guys wanna be a star,’ that guy, right?
“That’s really what it is, because the guy’s nice, he’s personable, he’s cool with the fans, he’s a good wrestler. He doesn’t really deserve that heat, but nevertheless, he has it.
“We had to go with it. Yes (he is a good heel). Sometimes people are just waiting to turn so they can get all that out of them, all the s**t that people have been telling them as a babyface, and you can’t because you’re still a babyface, and you’re like, ‘When I become heel, it’s on.’
“That’s what’s happened with him.”

El Hijo Del Vikingo will face WWE star El Grande Americano at the next AAA Alianzas tour event on November 28.
Despite being a heel on WWE TV, Americano is received as a very popular babyface among the Mexican crowd in AAA.
