After making a shock appearance on the ‘Winter is Coming’ episode of Dynamite, AEW announced that WWE Hall of Famer Sting had signed a full-time multi-year deal with the promotion.
It has been reported that the debut was done on this specific episode for a very good reason, and it is down to the fact that Christmas is now just under three weeks ago.
Dave Meltzer is reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Sting debuted on AEW Dynamite this week to try and capitalise on Christmas sales with his merchandise.
Meltzer notes that this strategy is likely going to work very well for AEW, as Sting set a record for the most amount of shirts in history sold on Pro Wrestling Tees in a single day following his debut.
Sting’s debut was very much designed to be there for Christmas season merchandising. Good signs on 12/3 was that the Impact web site crashed and Sting set a Pro Wrestling Tees all-time record for one day sales of any T-shirt in its history.
This is likely the reason that AEW had Sting come out in his new merchandise during his in-run to save Cody and Darby Allin from Team Tazz on the December 2nd show this week.
Speaking of Sting, WrestleTalk can exclusively reveal that the WCW icon was unhappy with how he was treated during his time with WWE. You can read more about that by clicking here.
