Real Reason For Cody Rhodes Vs. Brock Lesnar At WWE Backlash 2023

Cody Rhodes laid out a major challenge on this week’s episode of Raw, challenging Brock Lesnar to a match at WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico next month.

The challenge came from Lesnar laying Rhodes out on the Raw after WrestleMania 39 after seemingly agreeing to team with him against Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa.

There was some confusion regarding the match happening at Backlash, with some fans believing the match would be saved for a later date, likely the King and Queen of the Ring event in Saudi Arabia at the end of May.

However the reason that the match will be taking place at Backlash has now been revealed.

Per PWInsider Elite (via SEScoops), Brock was never set to appear on this week’s episode of Raw as he was away on a family vacation, but as announced on the show, he will be back on the show next week to make his match with Cody official.

The report notes that one of the reasons for the match happening at Backlash, and why the show is getting a lot of marquee matches, is that the show is in part a promotional event to push Puerto Rico as a travel destination, similar to the events in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom being used to promote those locations.

Other matches seemingly being set up for the show include The Usos and Solo Sikoa taking on Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Matt Riddle, Bad Bunny teaming with Rey Mysterio against Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio, and a potential Raw Women’s Championship match between Bianca Belair and IYO SKY.
