Last night, PWInsider reported that Matt Riddle will not simply be referred to as “Riddle” on WWE TV moving forward. This change was then confirmed by WWE, with the roster page of their website being updated.
Reports at the time seemed to suggest that WWE higher-ups, including Vince McMahon himself, are rather high on the Raw star. The current plan will reportedly see Riddle adopt a more serious character following the name change.
While this may be true, Dave Meltzer is reporting that the decision to change Matt Riddle’s name is also linked to the accusations that emerged regarding the former NXT star over the last few months.
Meltzer reports in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that higher-ups didn’t want people googling “Matt Riddle” and finding news articles concerning the lawsuit against him and WWE:
The company made the decision to drop Matt Riddle’s first name, and now he’s just “Riddle.” The story was that they wanted to not have people google “Matt Riddle” and come up with the details of the lawsuit against him and WWE. The decision was made on 10/29 and Riddle said he was fine with it and even preferred it saying Riddle is his name and he’s been called it for most of his life
