It’s fair to say that the ending of last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite has divided opinion, with a lot of fans criticising AEW for an underwhelming surprise debut in the shape of former basketball player Satnam Singh.
As many may have already figured out, The Wrestling Observer is reporting Singh’s debut comes as a direct result of AEW’s TV deal in India, where Satnam Singh is from.
According to the report, AEW has been airing on Discovery-owned channel Eurosport India, a deal which Tony Khan made based on the impending WarnerMedia/Discovery merger.
Singh is the only Indian-born player ever to be drafted by the NBA, so Khan was hoping having him on Dynamite would be a breakthrough in the Indian market.
As we saw last night, Singh is going to be managed by Sonjay Dutt, who is a well-known name in India already, having wrestled for TNA for many years. TNA had something of a cult following in India. Both Dutt and Singh will reportedly be used specifically to promote AEW in the Indian market.
You may recall WWE did something similar a few years ago when Jinder Mahal was suddenly pushed and given the WWE Championship.
