Last night at Extreme Rules, Rey Mysterio went one-on-one with fellow former WWE Champion Seth Rollins in the first-ever Eye for an Eye match. The match ended after Rey had his eye gouged out by Seth.
Later on in the show, Raw backstage interviewer Charly Caruso claimed that if Rey’s optic nerve had not been severed, doctors were optimistic that he wouldn’t lose his sight.
Following on from the gruesome match, it is quite likely that Rey Mysterio will not be on TV for the next few weeks, at least, to sell his injury. The reason for this has now been revealed.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Rey has now been written off of TV while his WWE contract situation is dealt with.
It was reported several weeks ago that despite being involved in a top Raw storyline, Rey Mysterio was working for WWE without a contract, after the 18-month deal he signed in September 2018 had expired.
The reason Rey hadn’t signed a contract was reportedly because of a financial dispute with Vince McMahon. According to reports, Rey asked for a pay rise on his new deal, a request that Vince McMahon rejected.
There is no word on if Rey is planning on re-signing with WWE, but it seems like he has been written off of TV to sell his eye injury, and won’t be back until the contract situation is dealt with.
