Real Reason Las Vegas Was Chosen For WWE SummerSlam Revealed

WWE President Nick Khan has explained why WWE is heading to Las Vegas in August for this year’s SummerSlam event.

WWE previously announced that SummerSlam will air on August 21 from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. This seemed an odd move seeing as the Manny Pacquiao vs Errol Spence Jr boxing match is set to take place on the same night, in the same city.

Nick Khan has noted that March Madness influenced the decision to visit Las Vegas. Speaking with the Las Vegas Sun, Khan discussed the opportunity to “help jumpstart the Vegas economy”, saying:

“We were paying close attention to March Madness because there was a thought that people might not be going back to Las Vegas (to bet and watch games) because there was nothing to go back to. Once March Madness hit, the occupancy rate skyrocketed. That was our moment of (understanding) if we have an event, it will get people back, and it’s an opportunity to also help jumpstart the Vegas economy.”

Khan also stated that he is hopeful that SummerSlam will lead to WWE returning to Las Vegas for more major shows.

Numerous reports have noted that John Cena will return to face Roman Reigns in the main event of SummerSlam. Cena recently admitted that he doesn’t think WWE needs him.

The 16-time World Champion also revealed that he took a lot of his early movie roles to help make WWE more popular. Cena stars in F9, which recently released in theaters, and is set to star in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad this summer.
