This week on Raw, WWE confirmed that the King of the Ring tournament would be returning for the first time since 2015. The event will start on next week’s Raw.
This was followed by the announcement of the 16 superstars who will take part in the tournament, with eight coming from Raw and eight coming from Smackdown.
With regards to why WWE higher-ups decided to bring the tournament back, Dave Meltzer is reporting in the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that the whole 16-man competition was brought back to put over one individual, the eventual winner.
Meltzer did not note who the winner of the tournament is expected to be, but did say that the whole idea with the 2019 King of the Ring is for the eventual winner to come out looking like a star.
