The real reason why Dragon Lee won AAA gold moments before announcing that he has signed with WWE has been revealed.
On December 28, Dragon Lee & Dralistico defeated FTR to win the AAA Tag Team Championship, ending Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler’s 438 day reign with the gold.
Following the bout, Dragon Lee revealed that he’s WWE-bound, stating that he will represent Mexico in his new home promotion.
With WWE touting Lee as a high-profile acquisition, it seemed an odd decision to have Lee be one of the two stars to reclaim the AAA tag titles from FTR.
Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were two main factors that led to Lee & Dralistico winning the gold.
Meltzer pointed out that AAA had been running with a Los Hermanos Lee ‘chasing the title’ storyline for a year prior to their eventual win.
He also noted that AAA wanted to push Dralistico, noting:
“The decision to go with Lee & Dralistico even though Lee was leaving was because they had been chasing the belts for a year, plus they wanted to elevate Dralistico.”
In WWE’s statement about the acquisition of Dragon Lee, it was stated that Lee relinquished his title.
Despite this, AAA reportedly wants to maintain a working relationship with WWE.
