Reason For Ronda Rousey’s Promo Struggles Revealed

Ever since the opening bell of her impressive debut at WrestleMania 34, it has appeared that Ronda Rousey was born to wrestle. She looked like a seasoned veteran in the ring, which led to some actually saying it was one of the greatest wrestling debuts in history. Rousey utilities a hybrid of quick strikes and brutal submissions and also is an incredible seller, all of which combine to make her opponents and matches look great.

Whilst her in-ring performances have surpassed everyone’s expectations, Rousey’s work on the mic has come under scrutiny. The former UFC Champion often stutters in her promos and loses both her train of thought, and subsequently the crowd.

Some have blamed this on her inexperience. Whilst Rousey competed at the highest levels in both Judo and MMA before ever stepping foot in a ring in WWE, she never attended promo classes like many of the other newcomers down in NXT at the Performance Center.

However, Rousey could have revealed the reason behind her poor promos in an interview with USA Today. When asked about the ”most difficult aspect of wrestling”, Rousey said ”I grew up with apraxia, which is a motor speech disorder. I had years of speech therapy, and I’ve always had problems slurring or mispronouncing my words. In the ring, it’s so important that you speak so clearly and you’re easy to understand and that you don’t falter at all, that it makes me more nervous and more likely to actually mispronounce things.”

Rare Disease Report actually suggested that Rousey’s apraxia could have been caused by her ” being born with an umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.” They would go on to add that ”her parents feared her mumbling and gibberish was caused from brain damage,” and that she did not begin to formulate sentences properly until the age of six. WWE fans can be cynical from time to time, but perhaps now that we have an explanation for Rousey’s sub-par promos, we can get off her back and support her.

However, Rousey should she leave WWE after WrestleMania 35 as has been speculated, the Raw Women’s Champion will not be remembered for the occasional botched line in a promo, but rather for being one of the quickest performers, male or female, to ever come to grips with wrestling.
