A possible reason for the throwback edition of Friday Night SmackDown on Fox has been revealed, after looking closely at other FOX shows.
Last night’s episode of SmackDown featured graphics and video packages that reminded fans of the WWE of old. It has recently been speculated that WWE may have been asked to put on a throwback special by Fox.
Wrestling Inc pointed out that NASCAR throwback events were also promoted for this weekend. Fox Sports promoted the nostalgic NASCAR shows for Friday and Saturday. WWE’s throwback show also took place on Friday night.
It was thought that Fox could’ve requested that WWE and NASCAR both put on these special events. The NASCAR event was recently advertised on Twitter:

Shortly after the throwback edition of SmackDown was announced, a report claimed that the announcement came as a surprise to many people backstage.
Jimmy Uso made his return on last night’s show, aligning himself with Roman Reigns and Jey Uso. Teddy Long also made an appearance, giving Cesaro an opportunity to earn a Universal Championship match.
