WWE recently filed for the trademarks of several old WCW and WCCW properties, sparking speculation that several classic shows from the past would be making their returns.
The continued use of the Starrcade name and the exhumation of WCW’s classic WarGames stipulation on NXT’s annual pre-Survivor Series TakeOver special led to excitement amongst fans that the likes of Halloween Havoc, Bash At The Beach and erm, Hog Wild, would be unleashed in due course.
Alas, it is bad news for fans in Sturgis because it seems that is not the case.
According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason behind the recent WWE filings is a preemptive measure rather than an indication of those properties making their way to WWE programming.
The action came about because WWE were unhappy that Major League Wrestling (MLW) trademarked the term War Games and were able to use the name and gimmick for their recent event. Registering the old trademarks prevents other groups from following suit.
