Reason Why WWE Changed Current Champion’s Ring Name WWE

The reason why WWE changed a current champion’s ring name has been revealed.

At WWE SummerSlam, former NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai made her main roster debut under a new name of IYO SKY, alongside Dakota Kai and Bayley to form Damage CTRL.

The trio were instantly slotted into a feud with Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch on the Raw brand. Since then, SKY and Kai have gone on to become two-time WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.

The company has yet to ever reveal why SKY’s name was changed, but it seems that an often-used reasoning is the explanation behind this change.

On Twitter, Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer was asked a question about why WWE changed SKY’s name. He answered:

“They wanted to own her WWE name, and she had used the name Io Shirai her entire career, so they couldn’t own it.”

Another fan would later ask why the recently returning Chelsea Green was able to keep her name, but Meltzer hasn’t responded as of this writing.

As previously reported, WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions IYO SKY and Dakota Kai are reportedly set to defend their titles against Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler at WrestleMania 39.

IYO SKY’s Damage CTRL stablemate Bayley will face Becky Lynch in a steel cage match on tonight’s WWE Raw.

We will have updates and breaking news on tonight’s episode of Monday Night Raw when they become available.
