On what has now been donned as ‘Black Wednesday’, WWE not only released several in-ring talent, but also a number of former wrestlers who have since gone on to have backstage roles as producers for WWE.
One of those let go was Shane Helms, otherwise known as The Hurricane. For the first time since his release, Helms sat down with Chris Van Vliet to speak about his experience working for WWE, whether he expected to be fired and much more.
During the interview, Helms implied that because he was off the road and was still being paid, he wasn’t too surprised when the call came from WWE saying that he’d been let go:
“Because I was getting paid to sit at home and do nothing I was preparing for the worst in terms of employment. So I was making plans for a phone call — or a text to come through. The text — for people out there who love to bad mouth WWE — the text was followed with a phone call. I had good conversations with WWE. It’s just a situational thing. It’s just a crazy time right now.”
Helms also explained that he had two contracts with WWE, one as a backstage agent and one as an in-ring performer:
“Because I was getting paid to sit at home and do nothing I was preparing for the worst in terms of employment. So I was making plans for a phone call — or a text to come through. The text — for people out there who love to bad mouth WWE — the text was followed with a phone call. I had good conversations with WWE. It’s just a situational thing. It’s just a crazy time right now.”
