A released WWE star has recalled Becky Lynch fighting “tooth and nail” for them to work together back in 2023.
In November last year, Nixon Newell (fka Tegan Nox) was released by WWE along with fellow women’s roster member Indi Hartwell.
Newell’s release ended what was her second stint in WWE after two years, having previously been signed to the company between 2017 and 2021.
Arguably the brightest period of Newell’s second run in WWE came when she chased Becky Lynch’s NXT Women’s Championship in the late 2023.
Newell’s efforts to become champion saw her challenge Lynch for the title on the October 9, 2023 episode of Raw, something she discussed during a recent interview with Metro.
While Newell admitted that she isn’t “necessarily proud of the match”, she had nothing but kind words for Lynch, detailing how The Man fought “tooth and nail” to work with her for the NXT Title.
Newell said:
“I think it could have gone a lot better on my end. That wasn’t my best performance, and I know it wasn’t. I was so incredibly nervous, I think that’s one of the few times that my nerves got the better than me in a match. So, I would have loved to have been able to run that back.”
‘She’s such a nice person, she asked for all the people that she wanted to work with, which is wild, for her to even go, ‘I want to work with Nixon’.
“I think even though it wasn’t my best performance, it made people go, ‘Oh, she can actually wrestle’. I’m like, ‘Yes, and I can do better than that, if you give me the chance’.
“Unfortunately, I never got the chance to show that. But that entire situation with Becky was just mind blowing, and something that I will hold very dear to me, not just the rest of my career, but for the rest of my life.
“I think it was a case of Becky wanted to work with me, so I did, I was hoping it would go somewhere. I was hoping people would go, ‘Oh, she can actually wrestle’. ‘Like, let’s give her something’.
“But there’s so many people in that company that it’s hard to get on your feet and running unless something insane happens. I just don’t think it was my time.”
Following the expiry of her 90-day non-compete clause with WWE, Newell is set to return to in-ring action for ATTACK! Pro Wrestling in May, where she will face off with fellow WWE alum Dani Luna.
