According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, FOX are currently in talks with WWE about have a weekly NXT show on Fox Sports 1 in order to go head-to-head with AEW’s upcoming weekly show.
SmackDown Live is moving to FOX in October, so it is definitely within the realms of possibility that the “developmental” brand could make the move as well.
While not confirmed, it is believed that FOX hopes that NXT will be able to compete, even if it is in a small way, with AEW’s Wednesday show, which will affect the ratings and therefore make AEW less of a threat to WWE.
Writing in the Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer said:
FOX is in talks about getting NXT onto television. While not said, I can definitely see NXT on FS 1 head-to-head with AEW. It’s kind of a no-lose situation for WWE. If the ratings are close with NXT on a weaker platform, it’s a blow to AEW. If NXT does significantly better, yes they did beat WWE but again, are on a stronger station and they only beat the developmental brand. Plus, if it siphons viewers from AEW, even 10 percent, it accomplishes the goal.
If the above is accurate, then it would seem that FOX doesn’t really care how well the weekly NXT show would do, as long as it in some way affected AEW’s viewership.
Stay classy, WWE and FOX.
