Now that it’s been going on for a while, it’s easy to forget how much of a big deal IMPACT and AEW working together was when Don Callis helped Kenny Omega defeat Jon Moxley to win the AEW World Championship.
Since then, we’ve seen Kenny Omega make several appearances on IMPACT, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson make a number of appearances for AEW, and Kenny will be facing IMPACT World Champion Rich Swann at IMPACT Rebellion on April 25 in a Title vs. Title match.
Fightful Select has now unearthed a bit more information as to how the deal between the two promotions actually came about.
The report states that a number of AEW stars became aware of a potential deal around September 2020, and that Luke Gallows had been talking to the Young Bucks for a long time about a potential partnership.
However, it was actually Kenny Omega and Don Callis who started discussions, as they had reportedly been talking about the deal for a year before anything actually came to pass.
Now that AEW is working with IMPACT, and IMPACT is working with NJPW, you have to wonder whether it’s only a matter of time before we have a relationship between NJPW and AEW. That would be cool.
