Thus far, AEW has done a fantastic job at using wrestling legends to enhance younger talent. For example, Tazz, Jake Roberts and Arn Anderson have helped the careers of Brian Cage, Lance Archer and Cody respectively.
However, it has emerged that AEW owner Tony Khan wanted to bring the former Universal Champion Goldberg into his company. However, unlike the aforementioned Tazz, Arn Anderson and Jake Roberts, this would have been for an in-ring run.
According to controversial wrestling figure Jim Cornette, Khan wanted to bring in Goldberg and have him go on a long undefeated streak like he did over two years ago in WCW. Here’s what Cornette said about the matter on his podcast:
“Goldberg was huge on Tony Khan’s want list. He wanted Goldberg to come out and do the streak over again. I mentioned how much you think he’s gonna charge for a 30-second job match? Probably the same as a main event PPV match.”
While someone like Goldberg seems like a polar opposite to the type of wrestlers that AEW has signed and pushed to the top of the card, there is no denying that he’d be a fantastic ratings draw for the promotion.
In a recent interview, Goldberg confirmed that his current WWE deal expires in 2022, so if Tony Khan is still interested in bringing him in, he’ll have to wait another two years at the very least.
