After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed last month by Impact Wrestling that their former World champion Eli Drake was fired from the promotion. The company released the following statement on the matter:
“Impact Wrestling announced today that it has terminated its relationship with Shaun Ricker, known as ‘Eli Drake”.

As soon as his departure was confirmed by Impact, many fans began speculating that Drake will likely end up in NXT. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful recently took part in a Q&A and was asked if WWE were interested in Eli. He had the following to say on the matter:
“No interest until he completely gets out of his Impact deal, but yeah there has been interest on WWE’s behalf. They really like how he can — I say ‘they’ — some really like how he can talk”.
Drake was signed to WWE in 2013, wrestling in NXT as Slate Randall. He requested his release just one year later, citing issues with then-head coach Bill Demott as the reason behind his unhappiness. However, the company are now high on his promo skills, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Drake back in an NXT ring in the near future once he is properly out of his Impact contract.
