In recent years, nostalgia for the now extinct WCW has increased, as modern fans still see the Monday Night Wars of the 1990s as the peak of pro-wrestling.
Once WWE won the war and bought WCW, it appeared that WCW was going to be swept under the carpet by WWE in the hope that new fans wouldn’t even know it existed.
However, some recent trademark filings by WWE suggest we could be seeing the return of WCW in some form, even if it’s just merchandise.
PWInsider notes that WWE has filed trademarks on the initials WCW – for business ventures like “cardboard packaging,” “collector albums for sticker collectables,” and “temporary tattoo transfers”.
There have been glimpses in the past few years that WWE is slowly bringing back aspects of WCW, with events such as Starrcade taking place. We’ve also seen the return of WarGames on NXT, a former staple of Eric Bischoff’s old promotion.
WWE is currently in dire need of something to help boost its TV ratings which are currently in free fall, so perhaps the return of more WCW themed shows could help do just that.
