Cody Rhodes made his return to AEW television this week and pulled no punches in his returning promo, referencing plenty of his fellow AEW roster including CM Punk.
During a picture in picture break, Cody set up a tall ladder before taking it to the microphone where he mentioned, “Someone told me to save this promo but I honestly don’t know if I’ll get the chance so I’m gonna do it now.”
He spoke about how CM Punk may have started the revolution, and while it “inspired thousands of would-be wrestlers, mobilized millions of fans” he wasn’t actually able to do the things that he spoke about whereas Cody, actually did them.
Rhodes went on to say,
“In the void that CM Punk did leave behind, somebody did do each and every one of those things: I did them.
“Before there was a ‘Forbidden Door,’ I was the one that built it.”
Elsewhere in the promo he also referenced reDRagon, Malakai Black, Brody King and Brodie Lee Jr., took a shot at NXT 2.0 and the recent renaming of WALTER by throwing in the line, “I know we’re not in the business of renaming people like Gunner McBillabuddy or whatever his name is…”
Cody Rhodes ended his promo by challenging Sammy Guevara to a ladder match for the TNT Championship next week at Beach Break.
