Alongside The Elite, one of AEW’s top factions is The Inner Circle. The group consists of AEW World Champion Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara and Santana & Ortiz.
However, the aforementioned Chris Jericho has revealed that instead of Santana and Ortiz, another of AEW’s top tag teams was originally supposed to be part of the group.
This week, Chris Jericho invited Sammy Guevara to be a guest on the Talk is Jericho podcast. During the show, Jericho revealed that Santana and Ortiz (formerly LAX) were not originally supposed to be part of the group:
“One of the ideas originally was The Lucha Brothers and I thought they were too much like superheroes. I wanted killers and Santana and Ortiz were perfect.”
Jericho also revealed that not only were the original members of the faction different, but so to was the name of the actual group. Y2J said that he wasn’t a fan of the name that Tony Khan suggested:
“Tony’s original name, I can’t remember what it was, I didn’t like it as much,” Jericho explained to Guevara. “Then I came up with the idea of a fist, which would be five fingers forms a fist, and I thought it would just be some cool merch. Tony didn’t care for that one, but I had done something for BTE (Being The Elite) where I mentioned my inner circle and The Bucks said ‘that’s a cool name, what about The Inner Circle?’”
I think Jericho is right. The Lucha Brothers have a certain level of mystique around them and don’t really fit the group. Having Santana and Ortiz as part of the Inner Circle was probably the right call.
