Former AEW star Rey Fenix officially made his WWE in-ring debut during tonight’s April 4 episode of SmackDown in Chicago.
In January, Fenix’s brother Penta made his WWE debut on Raw after departing AEW, and three months later, it’s Fenix’s turn.
Fenix actually faced an NXT star tonight in the form of NXT Tag Team Champion Nathan Frazer.
That’s not entirely random, as a few weeks ago, Frazer’s tag partner Axiom had a match on SmackDown against GUNTHER, so they’ll bring it up on NXT as part of the story of them continuing to try to one-up each other despite being tag partners.
Fenix did pick up the win over Frazer in the match tonight with a Mexican Muscle Buster.
In a post-match interview, Fenix said: “I’ve waited my whole life to say this – I am WWE.”
Despite debuting on the opposite brand to Penta so as not to interrupt the momentum Penta has built up since his arrival, there is already synergy between the official WWE merch for Fenix and Penta, so we’re still likely to see a Lucha Bros reunion at some point, even if not immediately.
Reports have suggested Fenix’s first real feud in WWE is planned to be Andrade, and there was a segment with Andrade and Nick Aldis pulled from a show a few weeks ago that would have set it up.
Legado Del Fantasma were shown watching backstage, with Santos Escobar saying a performance like Fenix’s is what he expects out of Angel and Berto going forward.
Berto called Fenix a “flying lizard”, and Escobar said he’ll speak to Nick Aldis to get a future Fenix vs Berto match set up.
