The real reason why Rey Mysterio didn’t compete in the 2023 Royal Rumble match has now been revealed.
During the Rumble, Rey Mysterio’s entrance music played for him to enter the bout as entrant #17.
Mysterio never entered the arena, leaving fans scratching their heads over the whereabouts of the legendary luchador.
Dominik Mysterio then entered the Rumble bout in the #18 spot. Dominik was wearing Rey’s mask, implying that he had attacked his father backstage and stolen his headwear.
On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted that Mysterio missed the match due to an injury:
“So the Rey Mysterio thing, Rey Mysterio was injured last night (Friday) in Laredo at the SmackDown taping in his match with Karrion Kross. He was going to be in the Rumble, that spot was changed.
“I think they were actually supposed to do some teases with (Rey Mysterio and Dominik) to set up a WrestleMania match, but obviously they couldn’t do that because Rey was injured.”

The Royal Rumble match was ultimately won by Cody Rhodes, who eliminated GUNTHER in the final moments of the bout to punch his ticket to WrestleMania 39.
