Hall of Famer and former WWE writer ‘Road Dogg’ Brian James has recalled arguing with Vince McMahon over AJ Styles during his time with the company.
Styles had an incredible WWE ‘rookie’ year in 2016. Fast-tracked straight to the main roster, Styles debuted in that year’s Royal Rumble match, before entering a feud with Chris Jericho, with the two notably facing off in singles action at WrestleMania 32. He finished the year as WWE Champion, after defeating Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) for the gold that September.
During his podcast on AdFreeShows.com, James noted that he had some ‘serious arguments’ with the former Chairman & CEO when Styles first joined the company:
“He didn’t know who AJ was and he didn’t know what he was capable of, and I did. Me pitching him in that way just made him dig in deeper, so we had some serious arguments over AJ Styles.”
Following Vince McMahon’s retirement, Triple H took over WWE creative. Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan were named co-CEOs of WWE.
Styles last wrestled on the August 8 edition of Raw, defeating The Miz in the main event of the show.
