Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer has awarded a recent ROH match his much sought-after (more than) five-star rating.
ROH Final Battle took place on December 10 and was the second ROH live event run by Tony Khan since he took over the company.
At the show, The Briscoes (Mark & Jay) faced FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler) in a double dog collar match.
The Briscoes would beat FTR to become the new ROH World Tag Team Champions, marking the thirteenth time they’ve held that championship.
In the current Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Meltzer described the match, in all its bloody gory, as:
“If you are into a bloodbath type of match, this was a must-see match.
“If you’re not, then you probably shouldn’t see it.”
The Briscoes would defeat FTR in 22 minutes, 22 seconds, according to Meltzer.
Meltzer recapped the end of the match, commenting:
“Jay superplexed Harwood on a bunch of chairs and used a crossface with the chain around Harwood.”
This would cause Harwood to pass out, leading to the ref stopping the match.
After the match, Meltzer states:
“The Gunn Brothers attacked FTR after the match and Austin Gunn said FTR’s legacy was dying and they won’t stop until the Gunn Brothers are the ones to kill it.
“The Briscoes chased out the Gunn Brothers.
“Dax was laying on the ground, unable to get up, and said they were coming after the Ass Boys.”
Blood and viciousness aside, Meltzer concludes:
“But for what they were attempting to do, it was incredible, easily among the best matches of the year, the best chain style match ever and among the top tier tag team matches ever. *****½”
Interference from The Gunns aside, FTR and The Briscoes would raise each others hand in celebration of the completion of their trilogy of matches this year.
The Briscoes lost the ROH Tag Team Championships to FTR at the ROH Supercard of Honor in April.
FTR had held the championship for 253 days.
