Huge Star Not Planned For WWE Backlash 2023 WWE

As fans continue to remain in disbelief over the result of WrestleMania Night Two’s main event between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, it seems like there is a clearer picture of where both men are heading in WWE’s upcoming creative plans post-Mania.

While Cody looks set for a program with Brock Lesnar following his shock heel-turn on Monday Night Raw, Roman looks set to take yet another backseat.

While Reigns’ more limited WWE deal has been known to see him take certain smaller-scale WWE premium live events off, WWE’s upcoming Backlash from San Juan, Puerto Rico was a question mark given the more unique location and market of the event.

However, with news breaking that Reigns is set to miss tonight’s Friday Night Smackdown, the writing was perhaps on the wall for the Tribal Chief’s Backlash status.

And now courtesy of Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), it seems that we have our definitive answer for WWE’s plans for Reigns in Puerto Rico.

Meltzer said:

“Reigns will not be on the San Juan card, or at least that wasn’t the plan on Monday, but he will be doing other major events over the next few months.”

Cody vs Brock has not yet been formally announced, however the match could perhaps be set for Backlash as well as well as a tag-match between the Judgment Day’s Dominik Mysterio and Damian Priest against Rey Mysterio and Puerto Rican native Bad Bunny.

Roman Reigns’ wise man Paul Heyman would recently defend WWE’s decision to have Reigns retain at WrestleMania which you can read more about here.
