It was reported at the start of last week that wrestling legend Sting was no longer under contract with WWE.
The rumours of his departure came about after Mattel put out a statement that Sting had to be removed from the Legends Series 7 collection of figures, and Pro Wrestling Sheet has now confirmed he is no longer under contract.
The statement from Mattel read:
“Due to circumstances out of our control Sting needed to be removed from Legends Series 7. We’ll look to include this figure in a future wave if he becomes available to us again.”
Reacting to the news, AEW Executive Vice President Cody replied to the above statement with the famous “Cody listening” GIF, and Dave Meltzer has now spoken on Wrestling Observer Radio about AEW trying to sign Sting.
While this is still very much a rumour, Meltzer explained that there is definitely something to the speculation, and that it isn’t just wishful thinking from AEW fans.
Sting’s career has spanned three decades, and while very little of it was spent in WWE, he is still regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
With Double or Nothing this weekend, could we see Sting make a shock debut in AEW? At 61, it’s unlikely he’ll be an in-ring talent, but a name like Sting could bring a lot of new eyes to the promotion.
