This weekend at Double or Nothing, we are going to see the first-ever Casino Ladder Match, where nine wrestlers will enter the match at different times and compete for a shot at the AEW World Championship in the future. The concept obviously draws comparison to WWE’s Money in the Bank and Royal Rumble matches.
We already know eight of the participants, with Rey Fenix, Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, Luchasaurus, Scorpio Sky, Kip Sabian, Colt Cabana and Frankie Kazarian confirmed for the match, but AEW has opted to keep the final entrant into the match a secret.
Some have speculated that the ninth entrant into the match, based on the fact that it will be a mystery opponent, will be a new AEW debutant. It seems unlikely that the company would promote a “mystery opponent” if they were always planning on having the ninth person be an existing member of their roster.
Some of the names that have been thrown around are Brian Cage, who reportedly signed for AEW several months ago, as well as both Drew Gulak and Sting, whose WWE deals both expired in recent weeks.
Speaking about the surprise opponent, Dave Meltzer has also speculated that it will be a debuting AEW star:
“Most of the guys who were cut from WWE’s main roster recently aren’t available right now… they’ve gotta debut someone, right?”
It seems like we may be getting two surprise entrants, as it is believed that a member of the match who has already been confirmed may have suffered a nasty injury on Dynamite this week that would rule him out of the show. Stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com for the latest.
