It was confirmed two weeks ago that AEW World Champion Chris Jericho will be returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling in January 2020.
The former IWGP Intercontinental Champion will be wrestling NJPW ace Hiroshi Tanahashi on night two of the Japanese promotion’s marquee Wrestle Kingdom 14 show on January 5, 2020.
Chris Jericho is the current AEW World Champion, and whether or not he is champion by January 2020 might impact the outcome of the match.
Dave Meltzer speculated on the Wrestling Observer Radio, that NJPW won’t have Jericho lose to Tanahashi if he is still AEW’s top champion.
AEW and NJPW currently don’t have a working relationship with one another. It is not believed that the two promotions have any plans on working together in the near future.
Some have speculated that AEW might keep the World Championship on Jericho to ensure that NJPW put him over Tanahashi on the show next year.
