This weekend at Backlash, Edge and Randy Orton are set to go one-on-one in a WrestleMania rematch. WWE higher-ups have bafflingly made the call to promote the match as the “greatest wrestling match ever”, when it almost certainly won’t be.
Edge has spoken publicly about not being a fan of the title, with some speculating that it has been done to hit back at those, including Dave Meltzer, who weren’t too fond of Edge and Orton’s ‘Mania match from earlier this year.
However, another reason for the questionable match title has been suggested, and it makes sense.
Every year when WWE goes to Saudi Arabia, one of the matches features some sort of over-the-top ridiculous taglines.
For example, we’ve seen the Greatest Royal Rumble and the Tag Team Turmoil Match to determine the Best Tag Team in the World. Perhaps the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” was a tagline that was going to be used in Saudi Arabia.
It would make sense for the Edge and Orton match in Saudi Arabia, two people the Crown Prince would have been fans of, to have been given the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”. The tagline is completely ridiculous and feels far more suited to a Saudi show.
This would also make sense as it was originally believed that Edge would only be working big PPVs and Saudi shows in his contract. Because of the Coronavirus, it looks like there won’t be another Saudi Arabia show in 2020, so perhaps the match was brought forward to Backlash this weekend.
Of course, it important to note that this is purely speculation and by no means an official report.
